The Washington Capitals, who have lost 3 of their 4 games on this West Coast road trip, are now in Seattle to try and reverse their losing ways.

The Caps are coming off a 6-5 overtime loss to the Edmonton Oilers, where they surrendered the game on a silver platter, but head coach Spencer Carbery and the players were strangely happy about.

Now the Caps are in the Kraken’s home lair and will try to slaughter this mighty beast of the deep. Sorry, I got a little too into the metaphor here.

The Capitals will be without two key defensemen tonight, Matt Roy and Rasmus Sandin, due to lower-body injuries. Logan Thompson will start against former Capital Philipp Grubauer in net.

Puck drop for today’s game is scheduled for a little after 10 pm. Today’s game is on The Dos: Monumental Sports Network 2. Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin have the call.

Tunnel shenanigans

1st Period

Puck is dropped. Protas-Sourdif-Wilson and Chychrun-Carlson get the start.

Strome on a makeshift 2-on-1, he tries to shoot short side but Grubauer snags it with his glove.

Brandon Duhaime took a Brandon Montour shot off his left skate boot. Great shot block, but he’s feeling it.

Connor McMichael deflects a Declan Chisholm shot off the inside of the post. So close! Wilson gets the rebound, but appears to miss the net.

As you might expect (this is a joke), the Kraken are taking it to the Capitals, outshooting them 7-2 in the game’s first 10 minutes.

3-on-1 break for the Capitals, Chychrun misses a wide-open net.

Vince Dunn blocks an Ethen Frank shot labeled for the empty net. Grubauer fell over after TVR, driving the net, nearly scored at the side of the net. TVR WITH THE DEKES!

McCann tries to jam one past Thompson on his backhand but the Capitals goaltender stays strong on the post.

Protas hit in the side of the head by a clearing attempt.

Ethen Frank high sticks Montour and he goes to the box with 29.4 seconds remaining. Frank appears to be ailing in the penalty box after two big hits he took earlier in the period.

At intermission: The game is tied 0-0. The Capitals have had their chances but they’re once again being abysmal with actually getting shots on net. Seattle is outshooting them 13-4. It’s unacceptable.

2nd Period

Puck is dropped.

Seattle has 1:31 remaining in their power play from the first period.

Huge one-timer from McCann beats Thompson past his glove. Seattle’s goal song is Nirvana which is awesome.

🚨

1-0 Seattle Kraken

PPG: Jared McCann (13). Assists: J. Eberle (17), C. Stephenson (18). Time: 1:15

Declan Chisholm just chucks it over the glass on his backhand at 2:33. Delay of game – Seattle back to the power play. This game is already teetering.

Thompson takes a McCann shot directly off the front of the mask. Jason Serbus is out to check on him. His mask fell off after he made the save. He’s clearly uncomfortable. He might have to go off for concussion protocol.

Okay, well, no, Thompson’s not going off for concussion protocol and staying in the game. Can someone explain to me what the concussion spotters do at games?

Ethen Frank takes a shot off his arm, he’s ailing. Then Sourdif gets slammed from behind after Dylan McIlrath shoves a Kraken player into him. He’s really uncomfortable on the bench.

Chandler Stephenson to the box for interfering Jakob Chychrun at 7:27. The Capitals will get their first power play of the night nearly halfway into the game.

Nice chance by Leonard in front, Grubauer stops him on the backhand.

Second unit out. McMichael force-feeding Sourdif every time he gets the puck. Fanned shot. Missed net. Turnover.

Shortly after the penalty expires, Seattle takes a 2-0 lead. McCann hiding out at the side of the net, buries a rebound.

🚨

2-0 Seattle Kraken

Goal: Jared McCann (14). Assists: M. Beniers (23), R. Lindgren (7). Time: 10:09

Carlson walked in the slot, Sourdif overskates, Caps lose coverage, Kraken’s Tolvanen rips one hard off the post. DING!

McIlrath with a horrible turnover in the defensive zone. Thompson comes up huge again.

Next shift, McIlrath really uncomfortable with the puck, nearly loses the puck in the corner.

Fehervary slammed hard into the end boards, he lost his skate blade.

Ryan Leonard, seconds later, blocks a shot, and he’s hurting and can barely skate.

Chychrun rips one off the post from the point. Another loud doink.

Melanson springs himself on a breakaway down the right wing, but the Kraken’s poor line change puts the play offside.

Seattle is just taking it to them wave after wave now.

The Capitals miss another wide-open empty net. Kraken defenders block it away.

Kraken come down and score the other way. This team man, it’s infuriating to watch.

🚨

3-0 Seattle Kraken

Goal: Jordan Eberle (19). Assists: J. McCann (11), A. Larsson (8). Time: 17:54

Caps have an odd-man rush, dumb pass by Strome, and it’s picked off by Dunn.

McIlrath with a hit on Ryan Winterton at the blue line.

At intermission: Seattle leads 3-0. The Capitals are being outshot 21 to 11. It’s embarrassing, honestly. So many little bad plays by the Caps are just adding up.

3rd Period

The comeback starts now or another really bad loss.

McCann scores on a breakaway – hat trick at 1:27. He saluted for fans to throw their hats and they are obliging. BUT WAIT A SECOND…

A potential high-stick is being reviewed that could negate the goal?? Officials never signaled or called a high stick. This is absolutely bizarre. Super-long review.

The goal is waived off. Sourdif was clipped in the corner in the shield but the official looking directly at it didn’t call it. Then after the goal, they called a four-minute penalty (it was a single minor at most). Just bizarre officiating, but now the Capitals are going to a 5v4 power play so that’s super cool. Matty Beniers to the box at 1:27.

Ovechkin scores on a nice passing play. It’s the 919th goal of his career. The crowd at Climate Pledge is audibly grumbling.

🚨

3-1 Seattle Kraken

PPG: Alex Ovechkin (22). Assists: R. Leonard (20), J. Chychrun (20). Time: 2:30

Capitals can’t score on the second part of the power play.

Caps have life, they’re here to play their one good period of the game.

Sourdif gets hooked by Berkly Catton, Capitals going back to the power play at 7:37.

Leonard’s shot blocked out of play off the initial faceoff win.

Strome’s big shot goes off the far post and out.

McMichael force-feeding Sourdif like he owes him money, puck gets blocked away.

Sourdif to the box for hooking Jamie Oleksiak negating the final 12 seconds of the power play.

Seattle with a ton of chances, but Caps hold.

Caps turning it over play after play at five-on-five. Less than 7 minutes to go.

Turnover/nothing play in the offensive zone by Sourdif. Goes back the other way. Ryker Evans sends a centering pass that goes off Tom Wilson’s skate and in. Bummmmmmmer.

🚨

4-1 Seattle Kraken

Goal: Ryker Evans (5). Assists: F. Gaudreau (10). Time: 13:12

Eeli Tolvanen to the box at 13:21 for delay of game.

Caps can’t score on the power play. Not much going there at all.

What is this defense.

🚨

5-1 Seattle Kraken

Goal: Matty Beniers (13). Assists: J. McCann (12), B. Montour (14). Time: 16:27

Ryan Winterton scores but Spencer Carbery is challenging for goaltender interference.

No goal. The goal was taken off the board because Melanson hit Thompson’s stick as he skated through the crease.

Melanson and Duhaime fight in the final minute. Big takedown by Melanson. Nothing like getting your butt kicked after getting your butt kicked on the scoreboard too.

Capitals lose 5-1. About as bad a loss as you can IMAGINE. Seattle outshoots the Capitals 32 to 20.

Really rough road trip rolls on: Kraken beat Capitals 5-1
