Eight days after the Washington Capitals season ended, Alex Ovechkin and his family appear headed back to their native Russia.
In an Instagram Story video, Nastya Ovechkina showed off the family’s massive haul that would be traveling back home with them on the flight. From what is shown in the video, there are eleven pieces of luggage, six full bags of hockey sticks at least, and 13 Washington Capitals hockey bags.
“As usual, we fly ‘lightly,'” Ovechkina joked in Russian and as translated by Instagram.
The amount of luggage rivals what they traveled with in 2018 when Ovechkin returned home with Washington Capitals’ Stanley Cup championship gear for friends, family, and apparently most of Russia.
The Ovechkins’ Memorial Day weekend travel comes after his agent Gleb Chistyakov told Match TV on Tuesday, “Sasha will soon fly to Russia. He will be in Moscow at the end of May. There are certain plans, he will tell them himself if he wants.”
Ovechkin will return home as the NHL’s new goals king after breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 on April 6. The 39-year-old Capitals captain finished the 2024-25 season with the fourth-most goals in the league and currently has 897 in his career. He plans on playing next season at age 40.
