The Washington Capitals lost their third straight home game in regulation on Saturday, but they still managed to win in another way.
Alex Ovechkin scored his 884th career goal late in the Capitals’ 3-1 loss, beating Andrei Vasilevskiy with a snap shot while camped out in the slot. The tally marked Ovi’s team-leading 31st goal of the season in 44 games.
Vasilevskiy never appeared to see the puck as Aliaksei Protas, jumping near the crease, took away the two-time Stanley Cup champion’s vision of the shot.
For Ovechkin, the goal brings him to within 10 of tying Wayne Gretzky’s NHL goals record of 894 and 11 from breaking the record. Ovechkin is on pace to tie the record April 1 at Boston and break it April 2 at Carolina.

The goal also marked Ovechkin’s 1,598th point (884g-714a in 1,470 GP), bringing him to within two of becoming the 11th player in NHL history to reach the 1,600-point mark. He’d also be only the seventh player to do so with a single franchise.
Matt Roy also registered his 100th career assist on the tally.
