The Washington Capitals grabbed another win on this five-game road swing against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night. Mercifully, that’s the last late-night game on this western part of the trip.
Washington’s goaltender played hometown hero, and they got some quick-strike offense from some usual suspects.

- The Capitals didn’t have their best at five-on-five again but they had enough. Their first period was especially rough, but they grew into the game a little and went mostly 50-50 with the Flames in the final 40 minutes. During those last two periods, they created more five-on-five expected goals than Calgary (1.53 to 0.86), which is great.
- Logan Thompson bailed them out of their early trouble and was fantastic yet again overall. He made 32 stops in his 23rd win of the season. He is now 23-2-3 in 28 games played with a 2.09 goals-against average, a .927 save percentage, and two shutouts. Per MoneyPuck, he saved 1.8 more goals than expected in the win.
- Washington continues to respond super well to losses this season. They are now 14-2 in a game following a defeat. Per the NHL, the Capitals’ 73 points are also tied for the second most through the first 50 games of a season in franchise history.
The Capitals have a record of 18-7-1 on the road this season and are tied with Minnesota for the most road wins in the NHL.

- Ethen Frank deserves a shoutout for drawing two separate penalties by using his speed. The Capitals’ power play was really cooking from a chance-creation standpoint and he got them on the ice when momentum was slipping a bit in both the second and third periods. He played just 7:15 of ice time in the win, but he definitely made those minutes count.
- Aliaskei Protas potted the insurance marker, giving him a career-best five-game point streak. The big Belorussian is just one goal behind Alex Ovechkin for the team lead in goals.
- The Capitals have won 9 of their last 11 games against the Flames. In their last six road games against Calgary, they’re 5-1. Someone let Rasmus Andersson know about that.
