The ice sheet at MedStar Capitals Iceplex will have a new look and feel this season.
Friday, the Washington Capitals installed their 50th anniversary logo into the ice at the main faceoff circle, mimicking the new ice design at Capital One Arena.
Practicing Capitals players — including captain Alex Ovechkin, who took part in his first informal skate of the new year — did their work on the second ice sheet over at the “Arlington Rink”, which the team typically only uses when they practice on both sheets of ice.

The Capitals’ 50th anniversary logo replaced the team’s wordmark logo.

The Capitals are going all out to celebrate their 50th anniversary as the new season approaches. The team will wear special patches on the front of their jerseys and celebrate their different eras during the regular season with special giveaways and ticket offers.

The Capitals, who were founded by Abe Pollin, first joined the NHL as an expansion team during the league’s 1974–75 season along with the Kansas City Scouts, playing in Landover, Maryland. The team now plays in Washington DC and practices in Arlington, Virginia, a few miles south of their home arena.
