Alex Ovechkin is back on the ice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex.
After making the long journey back from Russia on Wednesday, the Capitals captain joined the large group of his teammates who have begun participating in informal skates at the team’s practice facility over the past few weeks. Washington’s training camp will officially begin on September 19.
Ovechkin, who’s scored 853 goals in his career, is just 42 tallies shy of capturing the NHL’s all-time goals record from Wayne Gretzky (894). He has two years remaining on his contract with the Capitals. Last season, he scored a team high 31 goals.
The 2024-25 campaign will mark Ovechkin’s 20th season in the NHL. He turns 39 on September 17.
