At 7 PM the second-place Caps will host the third-place Wings. Both teams are positioning for the second wild-card spot, though the Caps may also challenge the Flyers for third in the Metro. Versus the Red Wings, The Caps are in the better spot, having played one less game and with one more point. Both have comparatively tough remaining schedules. Both teams are rested. And this game is a big deal for everyone.

According to HockeyViz, a regulation win by Washington (left column) would improve Washington’s chances by 11 percentage points and drop Detroit’s by 12. A regulation win by Detroit would basically do the opposite.

Moneypuck has a similar analysis, with each team gaining 13 percentage points in a rego win and losing about 14 points in a rego loss. So imagine adding (or subtracting) a number in the low teens from the Caps chances, according to these models.
