The Washington Capitals are staying busy before the trade deadline in two days.

The team announced that Rasmus Sandin has agreed to a five-year extension worth $4.6 million per season. The slick, Swedish defenseman was scheduled to become a restricted free agent in the summer.

Sandin’s new deal is a raise of $3.2 million from the $1.4 million he has made this season and the last.

The extension will see the 23-year-old Sandin remain under contract with the Capitals through the 2028-29 season. He joins Tom Wilson and Aliaksei Protas as the three players on the current roster who have contracts that long with the Caps.

In 52 games this season, Sandin has recorded 20 points (3g, 17a), skating the second-most minutes per game of any player on the team (21:19).

Sandin was originally acquired by the Capitals at last year’s trade deadline in a deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs. To get him, the Capitals sent defenseman Erik Gustafsson and a 2023 first-round draft pick that they received from the Boston Bruins in an earlier deal involving Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway.

Here’s the press release from the Capitals:
