Live blog: Capitals take on Avalanche in another tough test

📸: RMNB

The Washington Capitals, after a successful weekend against the two top teams in the NHL, are back on the ice to take on another behemoth of the NHL: the Colorado Avalanche.

The two teams’ previous matchup late last month was a 6-2 blowout by the Avs at their home arena. Now the Capitals will try to exact payback at Capital One Arena.

Tom Wilson will play on the team’s checking line tonight to try and contain Nathan MacKinnon . Charlie Lindgren will get back in net a couple of nights after his 3-0 shutout of the Boston Bruins.

Tonight’s game is on Monumental Sports Network. Puck drop is a little after 7 pm. Joe B and Locker have the call.

Alex Alexeyev and Matthew Phillips are the Capitals’ scratches.

Tunnel weirdness

1st Period

Charlie Lindgren will oppose Alexandar Georgiev in net. The Capitals start Malenstyn-Dowd-Wilson and Fehervary-Carlson.

🚨 1-0 Avalanche. Ross Colton scores easily on a breakaway after two bad step-ups by Martin Fehervary and John Carlson in successive plays. The goal comes at 2:46 of the period.

🚨 2-0 Avalanche. Devon Toews scores on a big shot from the point after Lindgren is heavily screened in front by two Avalanche players. The goal comes at 4:57.

🚨 2-1 Avalanche. Beck Malenstyn scores on a big rebound in front of the net after a Martin Fehervary shot from the point. It’s Malenstyn’s fifth of the season and comes at 9:16.

🚨 2-2 tie. Two goals in 44 seconds for the Caps! Connor McMichael’s centering pass banks off a Avalanche’s skate and in. After some tough puck luck lately, the Hockey Gods finally gave him one. The goal comes at the 10:00 mark exactly.

Fascinating stat here.

Nathan MacKinnon trips John Carlson on an odd-man break in the Capitals offensive zone. Caps get the first power play of the night at 11:47.

Oshie negates the rest of the power play as he takes a holding penalty on Josh Manson as he’s falling to the ice at 12:57.

A true legend of sport.

Another respectable period of hockey against one of the league’s best. The Capitals outshot the Avalanche 12 to 10 and out-attempted them 21 to 14 at five-on-five. Don’t ask me to explain. I don’t get it either!

2nd Period

Puck is dropped.

🚨 3-2 Avalanche. Artturi Lehkonen scores in front of the net after Connor McMichael can’t fully stop Ross Colton’s centering pass with his stick. More bad luck for McMike. Goal comes at 8:50.

Jonathan Drouin nearly scores on Georgiev as he tried to bunt the puck over to his goalie to freeze the puck. With Wilson bearing down on him, Drouin put the puck in the air forcing a heads up stop.

McMichael denied on a point-blank chance right in front of the net.

Capitals get whistled for too many men at the 16:20 mark. Alex Ovechkin is serving the penalty. The Caps need to kill this penalty off.

🚨 4-2 Avalanche. Lehkonen with a no-look between the legs pass to Mikko Rantanen for a slam dunk goal on the power play. It snaps an 0 for 14 power-play goalless streak for the Avs and is Rantanen’s 29th goal this season. Goal comes at 17:03.

Mikko Rantanen to the box for tripping Alex Ovechkin with 3.8 seconds left.

The Avalanche are now outshooting the Capitals 22 to 18 and out-attempting them 38 to 32 at five-on-five after a monster second period. The Avs out-attempted the Caps just in the period 25 to 21.

3rd Period

Puck is dropped.

Nic Dowd to the box for hauling down Samuel Girard and 4:12. Dowd was screaming inside the box because he felt Girard held onto his stick, which caused him to fall.

Josh Manson to the box for elbowing Tom Wilson at the 8:00 mark, but he basically checked him normally. Bizarre call. Wilson was shaken up on the play though.

🚨 4-3 Avalanche. SIX STRAIGHT GAMES. Alex Ovechkin scores again! The goal came at the 9:00 mark.

🚨 5-3 Avalanche. Artturi Lehkonen scores on the empty net at the 19:01 mark. He now has a four-point night. Nathan MacKinnon set him in neutral ice to waltz the puck into the net.

🚨 6-3 Avalanche. Miles Wood adds another empty-netter.

Capitals lose 6-3. After a fantastic first period, the Capitals got clobbered. The Avalanche outshot the Caps 37 to 26.
