Live blog: Washington Capitals take on Ottawa Senators north of the border

The Washington Capitals will play their first away game of the season as they take on an upstart Ottawa Senators team north of the border.

The Caps, who are 1-1-0 early in the season, will try to take the momentum they garnered from Monday’s 3-2 shootout victory over the Calgary Flames.

Tonight’s game in on Monumental Network and puck drop is a little after 7 pm.

Tunnel weirdness

1st Period

🚨 1-0 Senators. Vladimir Tarasenko with a nice finish in front of the net to give the Senators the lead 4:28 into the game. Tarasenko has 5 points through his first 3 games with Ottawa.

🚨 2-0 Senators. Unreal pass by Drake Batherson to find Josh Norris for a slam-dunk in front of the net on a Senators power play. TJ Oshie was in the box for a ticky tac slashing call.

🚨 2-1 Senators. Breakdown by the Senators in front of the net (ie: Ovi trying to go through the legs and causing a two-human pileup) leads to a John Carlson goal. The goal came at 1:06 of the first period.

2nd Period

🚨 3-1 Senators. Bad Nick Jensen turnover. The Capitals defenseman tried to pass it off the endboards backwards to himself. Instead it went right to the Senators who scored immediately. That’s Josh Norris’s second of the game. It comes at the 1:47 mark of the period.

🚨 4-1 Senators. Artem Zub beats Darcy Kuemper from the point after he got screened in front (4:46 into the second). The rout is on in Ottawa.

🚨 5-1 Senators. Claude Giroux scores after a nice passing play down the wing.

The goal came at the 15:47 mark. Spencer Carbery challenged the goal for being offside (it sure looked like Brady Tkachuk was offside entering the zone), but after a long review, officials determined it was a good goal.

Tom Wilson gets in a fight (he takes the instigator) with Mark Kastelic after Rasmus Sandin gets sandwiched with a hit behind the net. Not many punches. That’s Tom’s second fight in three games. Not a good trend.

3rd Period

🚨 6-1 Senators. Jake Sanderson beats Darcy Kuemper clean top corns.
