The Washington Capitals mic’d up Tom Wilson during Saturday’s scrimmage and the result is a fantastic piece of hockey cinema.
Wilson chirped Capitals coaches, rookie players, and veterans. The right wing saved most of his ire for the defenders he matched up against that day including Brenden Dillon, Radko Gudas, Dmitry Orlov, and Tyler Lewington.

Here are the highlights.
- The video starts with Wilson telling Nicklas Backstrom, “I have a mic on” and then pointing to the camera guy training in on him.
- After seeing a coach’s oversized helmet, Wilson replies, “What a bonnet!”
- Wilson, Kuznetsov, and Ovechkin combine for a beautiful tally. “What a goal,” Wilson says as he turns to Kuznetsov on the bench. “That was a Red Army goal.” The Red Army is a reference to Russian hockey.
- “I got benched already.”
- Wilson implores his coaches to put Connor McMichael in the game. “Put f*cking Mikey out there,” Wilson says. “A little OHL hockey.”
- Then Tom does some mentoring. “Whiffed on it, eh?” Wilson says to McMichael, the team’s top prospect. “A goal is a goal though Mikey. That’s how a lot of mine go in.”
- Wilson randomly and loudly laughs at his teammates from the bench.
- Wilson cannot get over how tough the other team’s defenders are. “A lot of f*cking toughness on that backend: Lewy (Tyler Lewington) and Dilly (Brenden Dillon).”
- After getting checked hard into the end boards, Tom turns to his teammates on the bench and goes, “Dilly’s sending a f*cking message over there.” Later he skates over to Dillon and says, “F*cking towing the line, [number] four. Jesus. I’ve got Gudy, Snarls, Dilly, I’m in over my head there. That’s a lot of meat back there. That’s why I kept quiet. I had no backup.”
- As he skated over for a faceoff, Wilson talks to Radko Gudas. “Gudy? Off the melon? HAHA,” Wilson starts. “Yeah,” Gudas replies. “Did you hear me? I was fucking dying,” Wilson says.
- “Marty (Martin Fehervary) looks like Chris Chelios with that tan.”
- Wilson turns the puck over in the defensive zone after a bad outlet pass. “Sorry, Johnny. I’ll get that one out of the way when we’re playing our own team. Sexy is coming in hot there.” [Jonas Siegenthaler crashes into the boards in front of him] “OOOOOOO, Long arm!”
- “Bouuuuuch! BUCH!”
Wilson, like TJ Oshie, seems like such a great guy to play with. No wonder the coaches say he’s captain material.
