On Thursday night, Dalton Thomas was outside his home when he noticed something peculiar in the window of one famous DC resident: the silhouette of the World Series Trophy. But this wasn’t some extravagant replica. It was the real thing.
Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo, who lives in Navy Yard, put the Commissioner’s Trophy out “[i]n honor of Opening Day!” according to The Washington Post’s Barry Svrluga.
Dalton took several photos of the Commissioner’s Trophy, including one where he pointed at it from far away.
“I’ve never met Mike Rizzo but I knew he lived in Navy Yard,” Dalton said. “What a great guy to bring some positive energy to the neighborhood in a time like this.”
Dalton sent the photo to his friend Jennie, who shared it on her Twitter account.

The Navy Yard Nats, another popular Twitter account, shared photos as well, eventually inspiring an article out of the Washington Post columnist and author the next day.

“I think that was an amazing idea,” Dalton said. “The city was looking forward to this day since we won the World Series and since we weren’t able to go to the game, it was nice to still get a glimpse of the trophy.”
Rizzo’s tribute was one of many on what was supposed to be the Nats’ Opening Day and banner raising. A group of Nats fans in Friendship Heights sang Take Me Out To The Ball Game from their balconies when the first pitch was going to be thrown. The Nationals also took out an ad in The Washington Post thanking fans and wishing them well during the coronavirus outbreak. “Until we can be together again, be safe and stay well,” the Nats wrote.

“As a local guy, I’ve been a Nats fan since they came to DC,” Dalton said. “Living in the Navy Yard for the past year, it’s been quite the ride watching them battle the entire season and come out on top the way they did.”
Yeah, it was pretty cool to see. Not the home opener but thanks for last year! pic.twitter.com/Zc5cseaNyx
