Ted Leonsis on why Alex Ovechkin could break Wayne Gretzky’s goal record: ‘Russian machine never breaks’

Washington Capitals majority owner Ted Leonsis will be on the ice as part of a pregame ceremony honoring Alex Ovechkin for scoring 700 goals, Tuesday night.

But before he did that, Leonsis spoke to NBC 4 Washington about what makes Ovechkin so great and why he’s still such a great goalscorer at age 34.

“Alex’s shot hasn’t lost anything. He’s been able to play every game – you know, Russian machine never breaks,” Leonsis said of Ovechkin’s legendary durability.

Leonsis also went on the record saying that he believes Ovechkin can eventually surpass Wayne Gretzky’s goal record (894).

“If he can continue that this year, he got his 700th goal, there’s a bunch of games left, that’s another 10-15 goals this season to get 50, 55, 60 goals, and you’re this age and he was the fastest to go from 500 to 600 and then 600 to 700, so it’s all about health and us continuing to having a good team,” Leonsis said. “We’re committed to him and to our fans to continue to have excellence around him and why not. Let’s try to make history!”
