Alex Ovechkin becomes the greatest powerplay goal scorer of all-time born outside of North America

Alex Ovechkin made some history with his second-period powerplay goal against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Ovechkin (256) moved into third place on the all-time powerplay goals list passing Teemu Selanne (255). The Russian machine is now the greatest powerplay goal scorer of all-time born outside North America.

Ovechkin’s historic PPG came one-minute and twenty-nine seconds after Jordan Staal stuck out his leg and went knee-on-knee on The Great 8.

Ovechkin fell to the ice and struggled to get up. Eventually, he got back on his skates and skated back to the bench where he flexed his knee during the TV timeout. Pissed, Ovechkin would come back and take his next shift on the resulting powerplay.

After a beautiful pass by fellow countryman Dmitry Orlov, Ovechkin fired an unstoppable one-timer from his office past Petr Mrázek.

Yeah, ain’t nobody stopping that.

Once Jordan Staal left the penalty box, Ovechkin screamed at him as he made his way off the ice.

The goal was Ovechkin’s 24th goal of the season and the 682nd of his career. He is now three goals shy of passing Selanne (684) for 11th all-time.

In terms of PPGs, Ovechkin only trails Dave Andreychuk and Brett Hull.
