Movin’ and groovin’: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals stayed hot Saturday night in DC, taking down the Vegas Golden Knights 5-2. That is the Caps sixth victory in a row and gives them a record of 10-0-1 in their last eleven games.

The Caps out-shot the Golden Knights 34 to 32, but were out-attempted at five-on-five 35 to 34.

  • The overall effort in this one was pretty great. The Caps got a lead and then shut the game down to perfection at even strength afterwards. The Golden Knights had just three scoring chances and zero high danger chances at five-on-five in the third period.
  • John Carlson‘s two point evening gave him 431 points in his career, handing him sole possession of second all time in points by a defenseman in Capitals history. He passed Scott Stevens‘ mark of 429 points.
  • Congrats to Jonas Siegenthaler on his first NHL goal in his 44th career game!

  • Connor McMichael had a three point night for London in the OHL, giving him 41 points in 16 games to start his season. Aliaksei Protas scored a goal for Prince Albert in the WHL, giving him 30 points in 20 games. Both prospects lead their respective leagues in scoring.
  • Evgeny Kuznetsov has seemingly hit a good stride here and he was noticeably effective in this one. His two point night gives him seven points in his last three games. His linemate Jakub Vrana also stayed hot, adding two assists. The last part of that trio, Tom Wilson scored his third goal in two games and now has eight on the year.
  • The Caps have now played over 20-percent of their season. They are atop the entire National Hockey League and have scored 74 goals already this season. The next closest club to that mark is the Nashville Predators at 64.
