Six is sweet: Caps beat Golden Knights 5-2

The Washington Capitals came into tonight’s action on a five game winning streak. Standing in their way of six was the Vegas Golden Knights.

Evgeny Kuznetsov struck lightning quick on the breakaway to open the scoring. Tom Wilson stayed hot and put the Caps up two early. Max Pacioretty grabbed one back off a faceoff. Jonas Siegenthaler slotted home his first NHL goal to restore the two goal lead for a very short time before Reilly Smith’s power play goal.

Nicklas Backstrom added some insurance in the third twice.

Caps beat Golden Knights 5-2!

  • Great first period. I thought the Caps were the clear better team in terms of closing down neutral, forcing the Knights to ice the puck multiple times. They also created a ton of chances off the rush that were giving Marc-Andre Fleury fits and the only goal against came off a very unlucky faceoff bounce.
  • Tom Wilson is now on a 36 goal pace over a full 82 game regular season. That isn’t too far from the 28 goal pace he finished last season with, but that 30 goal mark is real nice and shiny.
  • I still cannot stand the Vegas official Twitter account. There’s a fine line between professionalism and cringe memelord that I don’t think they walk very well.

  • Not as good in the second, but not exactly bad either. Limited the Knights to really no offense at even strength, but also did not create any of their own. Perfectly fine period with a lead…when your special teams are working. Caps gave up a power play goal against and couldn’t convert on their own chance.
  • Caps 2019 first round pick and the OHL’s leading scorer, Connor McMichael was in action once again for the London Knights. McMichael decided to put up a three point first period with two absolutely beautiful, highlight plays mixed in there. He now has 41 points in 16 games to start his season.
  • Congratulations are in order for Siegs! Jonas Siegenthaler put home his first career NHL goal in his 44th career NHL game. Fantastic feed from Travis Boyd.
  • Multiple penalties at the very end of periods to give the Golden Knights extended power plays to start periods. When you have a small lead like the Caps did, those are killer. Gotta protect Nicky though.

  • Defensive, stop-start third period. Got the job done, added an insurance marker. Two more points.
  • Great game from the Caps fourth line. Nic Dowd should never be healthy scratched.
  • The Caps scored only the fourth power play goal against the vaunted Golden Knights penalty kill this season when said penalty kill is on the road.

The Arizona Coyotes are up next for the Caps. The Coyotes had me blocked on Twitter at one point for almost a full year even though I had never interacted with them.
