The Washington Nationals just won the franchise’s first career World Series game, but it was a nailbiter.
After taking a commanding 5-2 lead in the fifth inning, the Nationals saw that lead evaporate quickly, needing Sean Doolittle to get the final four outs to hold on to the 5-4 win.
The Washington Nationals lead the Houston Astros in the World Series one game to none. (Yes, you read that correctly.)
The Houston Astros immediately got on the board in the first inning after Yuli Gurriel knocked home two runs with a double off Max Scherzer. But in the top of the second, Ryan Zimmerman responded immediately, hitting a solo dinger off Astros ace Gerrit Cole.

Cole had only given up one earned run in two previous starts combined during the 2019 postseason.
Two innings later, Juan Soto hit a bomb off Cole to tie the game up at 2-2.

George Springer, 2017 World Series MVP, would respond. First, in the sixth inning, the outfielder hit a home run off of Tanner Rainey. It was his fifth straight World Series game with a home run – a new record.

But that was as close as the Astros would get. Sean Doolittle retired all four batters he faced for the save.
In summary, the Washington Nationals went 1-0 today.
