Alex Ovechkin showed up to MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Monday like he wrestled a grizzly bear. Ovechkin sported a gnarly gash on the bridge of his nose and scuffs, scrapes, and bruises on his hands and arms.
“[Sunday] night, I fell off bike,” Alex Ovechkin said to reporters after practice.
Tuesday afternoon, after transforming into a Giant Food cashier to promote his new cereal, Ovi O’s, Ovechkin gave the full story behind his accident. The Capitals captain revealed that the pedals of his bike broke sending him hard onto the ground below.

What happened?
Alex Ovechkin: [Exasperated sighs] Man. The bike broke. My pedals broke, stuck. I didn’t have time to figure out what to do. Thanks god I have a helmet on me. I don’t know how it caused. It cuts me. If I didn’t have a helmet, I probably be with you guys right now gonna be from hospital or somewhere else. It’s a good thing I wear a helmet. It saves.
How do you feel?
Alex Ovechkin: Feel good. I’m a little sore but it’s okay.
Were you riding off road?
Alex Ovechkin: I was training with my coach. It happened [near] my house. Like 30 seconds. Like we drive, another mountain, drive up the hill. Then it happened.
I still have so many questions but this is probably the best explanation we’re going to get.
