Alex Ovechkin went on a surprise promotional tour on Tuesday to promote his new cereal, Ovi O’s. The cereal will be exclusively sold at Giant Food stores in Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC, and Delaware on September 17th – Ovi’s birthday.
But on this day, the future Hall of Famer gave local elementary schoolers, children at Georgetown University Hospital, and lucky shoppers at a DC Giant the opportunity to try the honey-nut cereal for the first time.
The first stop was Arlington Traditional School, where Ovechkin surprised a class of second-graders. Teachers had told the students that the assembled media was there to interview students about being back to school. So the students were truly surprised when Ovechkin came through the door with a shopping cart full of cereal boxes.

“I’m back in school!” Ovi exclaimed as he sat with the students to try a bowl of his cereal. He even did one student’s math homework and received an “A+”.

The curious students asked him about the cuts on his face and hands, which he explained were the result of a bike accident he had two days ago.
“Wear a helmet, it saved my life,” Ovechkin told the kids.
The next stop on tasting tour was MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, where Ovechkin met with children in the pediatric hematology-oncology clinic. A portion of all Ovi O’s sales will benefit the Children’s Cancer Foundation.

The kids were big fans of Ovi O’s and excitedly showed Ovechkin the art projects they had made for him and for his cereal. One such kid was cancer-survivor Brock Ludwigson, who adorably wreaked havoc on Caps players several years ago.
The final stop on the tour was a Giant store in Washington DC. There, Ovechkin donned an employee uniform and an “OVI” nametag and stocked the shelves like a pro with boxes of Ovi O’s.

The boxes flew off the shelves quickly, selling out before Ovechkin had even stepped off the premises. The high demand came as little surprise to the Giant employees, one of whom said that they’ve been fielding calls from all over the US and even abroad, asking the stores how fans can get their hands on a box of Ovi O’s.
Ovechkin also took a shift as cashier, where he put his Ovi-spin on things with the shoppers he was checking out, including his wife Nastya.
“It’s a great moment,” Ovechkin said of the cereal tour. “We did a great job to create this box of cereal. I hope people going to enjoy it, because it tastes good. But again, we just try to help the kids [of the Children Cancer Fund].”
