Thirty-five-year-old Alex Semin is continuing his career in the Kontinental Hockey League this season and playing for HC Vityaz for the second straight year. After wearing an “A” for Vityaz during the 2018-19 campaign, Semin was officially announced as the captain days before the season.
He wore the captain’s “C” Monday in Vityaz’s regular-season opener against Traktor Chelyabinsk.
Semin scored twice in Vityaz’s impressive 4-2 victory.

A veteran of 650 NHL games, Semin is better known for his enigmaticness than his leadership by fans in North America. But this summer after Semin re-signed, Vityaz gave the slick skating forward the captaincy for what we believe is the first time in his career. Semin debuted as captain in late July during Vityaz’s first exhibition game of the summer against Metallurg Magnitogorsk. Vityaz lost 3-2. The game was played in Germany where the teams’ training camps were located.
Since ending his NHL career in 2015-16 with the Montreal Canadiens, Semin has played parts of four seasons in the KHL with Metallurg Magnitogorsk (where he won the Gargarin Cup) and Vityaz. Semin also suited up in the VHL with his hometown team Sokol Krasnoyarsk while he dabbled in getting his master’s degree at Siberian Federal University.
