Capitals PA announcer Wes Johnson poses with Venus Williams after tennis star suits up for Washington Kastles

One of the all-time greats of women’s tennis was in Washington DC last night.

Venus Williams, the older sister of Serena Williams, was on the rooftop of Union Market, participating in World Team Tennis action between the Washington Kastles and the Philadelphia Freedom.

The Kastles ended up losing 24-17, but there was one Capitals connection during the game.

Caps PA announcer Wes Johnson, who is also the PA announcer for the Washington Kastles, met Venus after the game. The two posed for a photo.

“Well, we didn’t get the win, but it was a beautiful night for tennis at @WashKastles Stadium at Union Market,” Johnson wrote. “The house was packed as @VenusWilliams sent the match into extended play, and from the looks on everyone’s faces, it was an evening well spent under, and with the stars.”

Fox News’ Bret Baier was in attendance and published video of Venus during the game.

Grand Slam doubles champions Bruno Soares and Nicole Melichar were also in the lineup for the Kastles.

Johnson has been the PA announcer for the Kastles for seven seasons where they’ve won three WTT championships. The 2019-20 season will be his 20th as the PA announcer of the Capitals. Recently, he got another huge break, as the promotional voice of Nickelodeon’s Spongebob Squarepants 20th anniversary special.

This season, the Kastles are playing on the roof of Union Market after spending the last four seasons at George Washington University’s Charles E. Smith Center. The venue offers spectacular views and with only 700 seats available, it has become a hard ticket to land.

The Kastles have five more games remaining this season, but only one more at home, Saturday against the Springfield Lasers. Venus Williams will once again suit up for Washington as it takes on the Freedoms again Friday night in Philadelphia.
