TSN is reporting that former Washington Capitals defenseman John Erskine was severely injured in a highway accident on Wednesday morning. The Ontario Provincial Police confirmed in a statement that a pickup truck was driving the wrong way in the eastbound lanes when the truck collided with a transport truck.
Erskine’s former agent, Pat Morris, confirmed Erskine was severely injured and hospitalized after the accident. He did not share any more details.
The Ontario Provincial Police say that the pickup truck was driven by a 38-year-old man from Elginburg, Ontario and that this person has “non-life-threatening injuries.” The driver of the transport truck was uninjured in the crash. Police anticipate pressing charges.
Erskine had attended the Napanee Raiders junior C hockey game earlier that night.
According to the Montreal Gazette, Karie Erskine, John’s wife, has posted on Facebook thanking people for their prayers and asking for privacy at this time. They have three children together.
Erskine, a fan favorite for his fearlessness and fights, played for the Washington Capitals from 2006 until the end of his playing career in 2014. He played 350 games with the Capitals and registered 49 points (12g, 37a).
Since retiring, he has maintained close ties with the team and was at the Stanley Cup Championship parade. He even had his opportunity to raise the Stanley Cup at a Capitals team party last summer.
