The Ontario Provincial Police announced that former Capitals defenseman John Erskine has been charged in his role in a collision on Highway 401 last May. Erskine, driving a black Ford pickup truck, hit a transport truck while driving west in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401.
The crash left Erskine with critical injuries, according to his agent Pat Morris.

Erskine was arrested and charged with dangerous driving, impaired driving, and operating a motor vehicle with more than the legal limit of alcohol in his system as reported by The Kingston Whig-Standard. The veteran of 491 NHL games was released from custody and will appear at the Ontario Court of Justine in Napanee November 19.
Since getting injured, there have been no updates on Erskine’s condition made public by his family. But in photos posted over the last few months by Erskine’s wife Karie, John poses with his family on Instagram but does not stand. In an anniversary post on July 16, Karie wrote, “Happy Anniversary babe 14 years ❤️ Next year we will be dancing together under the stars. ⭐️”
The fan-favorite defenseman played parts of 13 seasons in the NHL, including his final eight with the Washington Capitals. Erskine fought 65 times in the NHL, according to Hockey Fights.
