Playoff report: April 26, 2019

The Carolina Hurricanes continue their winning ways in overtime and the San Jose Sharks jump out to an early series lead via blowout.

Carolina Hurricanes 1, New York Islanders 0

Carolina leads series 1-0

  • The Hurricanes have won two straight games in overtime without leading for a single second. Haha…haha…please end the pain.
  • Exactly 13 years ago to the day, Jordan Staal‘s brother Eric also scored an overtime goal in the playoffs for the Hurricanes.
  • Petr Mrazek is the third goaltender in Canes/Whalers franchise history to record two shutouts in a single playoff year, joining Cam Ward (2006, 2009) and Kevin Weekes (2002).

San Jose Sharks 5, Colorado Avalanche 2

San Jose leads series 1-0

  • Brent Burns‘ four point night moved him past Dan Boyle into first place in Sharks franchise history in playoff scoring by a defenseman.
  • Joe Thornton became the 24th player in NHL history and the third active skater (Crosby, Malkin) to record at least 100 career postseason assists.
  • With the Sharks, Canes and Bruins wins, each team that won a Game Seven in Round One has won Game One of Round Two. Just keep driving that stake in my heart.
