Clean sweep: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals took down the Philadelphia Flyers yesterday afternoon by a score of 3-1 and clinched the season series sweep. That’s unimportant in the grand scheme of the season, but it always feels good to beat Philly.

The Flyers out-shot the Caps 36 to 30.

  • Before the game, head coach Todd Reirden told the media that pretty much every single player on the team is dealing with some sort of sickness and that they all were technically game time decisions. I think this showed through the first forty minutes as the Caps looked very sleepy and very lethargic. Once the third period rolled around though, it seemed like the blood was pumping and they got a good sweat going in a much better period of play to seal a win.
  • That second period though…yikes. The Flyers at five-on-five out-attempted the Caps 37 to 9, out-scoring chanced them 19 to 5, and out-high danger chanced them 9 to 2 in that period alone. Burn that tape immediately.
  • Nick Jensen recorded the primary assist on Tom Wilson‘s deflection goal and that assist set a new career high for Jensen of 16.

  • Wilson’s goal was his 22nd of the season, TJ Oshie has 22 goals this year, and Jakub Vrana scored his 22nd of the season in this game as well. They are all currently tied for the second leading scorer on the team. Alex Ovechkin, who apparently will never score again, obviously leads the team with 48.
  • At one point in this game, the Caps were being out-attempted 1 to 24 at five-on-five with John Carlson on the ice. To Carly’s credit, he helped turn that around to a 16 to 29 deficit by the end of the game.
  • This is only the second time in franchise history that the Caps have swept the season series with the Flyers. The first time was during Ovi’s sophomore season, 2006-07.
