Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is back in his other other red hockey jersey.
Papa John’s Russia recently released three new short commercials promoting the pizza chain overseas and Ovi’s personality is on full display.
In the first commercial, we watch Chef Ovechkin place pepperoni on a pizza with a laser-like precision similar to one of slap shots on the powerplay. The absent-minded Ovi, however, forgets that he is dressed in full hockey gear and accidentally knocks over all the kitchen supplies with his stick. Whoops!
Next, we have a pump-up video vibe as Ovechkin readies himself to go out on the ice for a game. Instead, he enters a different arena, the Papa John’s kitchen, to make you a pizza. He winks at the camera.
In the final clip, Chef Ovechkin, I think I’m noticing a theme here, races to make to make you another pizza. But he needs to quench his thirst after all that pizza-making exertion. As he reaches for water, Ovi grabs the wrong bottle and squirts tomato sauce all over his face.
In the promotion of Ovechkin’s ads, Papa John’s plays off the Caps captain’s recent Stanley Cup. “Champions are not born. Champions are made,” Papa John’s wrote on Instagram. “Papa John’s: pizza for real champions.”
According to Ovi’s agent, David Abrutyn, these commercials were shot in Miami over the summer as Ovechkin and wife Nastya prepared for their son Sergei to be born.
Ovechkin has been a spokesman for Papa John’s since January 2016 when the Ovechkin Wish Special was announced. A dollar from every deal purchased went to Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic — a charity near and dear to Ovechkin’s heart.
To promote the special, Ovechkin filmed a commercial, which we went behind-the-scenes of, revealing that his dream as a boy was to deliver pizzas. But since he was bad at that, he played hockey instead.
Don’t worry, Ovi! A gr8 man once said, “practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.” You’ll master the whole pizza thing someday!
