Sunday night in Hershey, the Capitals’ AHL affiliate Hershey Bears held their annual Teddy Bear Toss, where fans throw stuffed animals onto the ice after the first Bears goal of the night. It was Riley Barber with the lucky goal and after the puck went in the net the teddy bears started raining down onto the ice–a record-breaking number. The Bears shattered the world record collecting 34,798 stuffed animals.
The Bears collected an impressive 25,017 stuffed animals during last season’s event. This season, they aimed to break the world record of 28,815 stuffed animals thrown on the ice, a record set in 2015 by the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen.
With the record broken, local partner CommunityAid doubled their donation from 25 cents to 50 cents per stuffed animal. One of the Bears club seat holders also generously pledged to donate $1 per stuffed animal. All of the stuffed animals thrown on the ice are collected and donated, benefiting over 30 local charities, schools, food banks, and children’s organizations.
We know of one giant bear that made its way to the ice, thrown by Nathan Walker himself.
