Alex Ovechkin has recorded his 17th goal of the season late in the second period to give the Caps the lead over the Rangers.
While Ovi got the credit, this was a full-team effort.
The play started in the defensive zone with a mind-bending play by Ovechkin. The Russian machine deflected Nicklas Backstrom’s clearing attempt out of the air with his stick, before kicking the puck to a streaking Dmitry Orlov in the neutral zone.
Rangers goalie Alexandar Georgiev misplayed the resulting dump-in behind the net, where Ovechkin’s hit allowed Tom Wilson to send the puck up to the point, where Dmitry Orlov moved it to John Carlson, who delivered it to Ovi, now in the slot.
Your classic tic-tac-tac-tac-toe goal.
Ovi’s 17th of the season now ties the Russian machine with David Pastrnak and Jeff Skinner for the league lead.
The Great 8 continues to bring his best game against the Rangers.
Ovi’s tally caps off a comeback period, which the Caps entered down 1-0 and left up 3-2. If they can win this last period, Washington will take the Metro lead.
