In front of their dads and mentors, the Washington Capitals extended their season-long winning streak to five games at Madison Square Garden. The Caps took down the Rangers 5-3, overcoming an early two goal deficit to do so. The team is now first in the Metropolitan Division standings.
The Rangers out-shot the Caps 30 to 28, but were out-attempted at five-on-five 49 to 39.

This is getting ridiculous, but Tom Wilson scored again.
Clinging to a 4-3 late in the third period, the Capitals first-linger winger scored an empty-net goal with 1:08 remaining to ice the game for the Capitals.
But it was how he scored that was so remarkable.
In front of their dads at Madison Square Garden, the Washington Capitals won their fifth-straight game – a 5-3 win over the New York Rangers.
The victory, which was literally a battle for first place, gave the Capitals a 13-7-3 record, good for 29 standings points. The Blue Jackets have a game on hand on the Capitals who sit in second.
The Washington Capitals’ mentors trip kicked off at Madison Square Garden on Saturday afternoon. Playing an equally unrested New York Rangers team with big Metro Division standings implications, the Caps had to dig deep to secure their fifth win in a row. So that’s what they did.
The Rangers scored the lone goal of the first period, with Jimmy Vesey finishing off a tic-tac-toe after getting sprung from the penalty box.
The second period began poorly as Brady Skjei did that hockey so quickly that we hardly saw the puck go in. The Caps took over after that – first with Nic Dowd deflecting John Carlson’s shot, then a full-steam breakaway from Jakub Vrana to tie the score. Finally, Alex Ovechkin capped off a good forecheck with a point-blank goal to put the Caps up one goal in the final minute of the second period.
In the third, Ryan Strome wrapped around Copley’s net to even the score 3-3. Brett Connolly took a great east-west pass from John Carlson and turned into absolute fire to reestablish the Washington lead with six minutes left. Tom Wilson added an empty-netter just to piss off every other team.

Alex Ovechkin has recorded his 17th goal of the season late in the second period to give the Caps the lead over the Rangers.
While Ovi got the credit, this was a full-team effort.
With a four-game active win streak in tow, the Capitals left Washington last night and headed up to New York for a Saturday matinee with the Rangers. In spite of all reason and the explicit will of god, the Rangers are somehow competing for the top spot in the Metro. They’re just one point behind the Caps, who are one point behind the Blue Jackets. So, somehow, this late-November day game with zero rest will have a massive impact on the standings.
