In front of their dads at Madison Square Garden, the Washington Capitals won their fifth-straight game – a 5-3 win over the New York Rangers.
The victory, which was literally a battle for first place, gave the Capitals a 13-7-3 record, good for 29 standings points. The Blue Jackets have a game on hand on the Capitals who sit in second.
PS – The Pittsburgh Penguins are LAST.
In the Eastern Conference, the Capitals now sit fourth overall, behind Tampa Bay (33), Buffalo (32), and the Toronto Maple Leafs (30).
“We’re starting to get that feeling again through our room,” Brett Connolly said after the game. “We’re starting to get [that feeling] we had towards the end of last year. That’s what we’re working towards. Good team win. We’re playing really well of late.”
Monday, the Capitals will play their former coach, Barry Trotz, and the New York Islanders at Barclays Center.
