The special Stanley Cup Championship magazine spreads keep coming!
Alex Ovechkin is featured on the recent cover of #FlyWashington Magazine, the official publication of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
On the cover, Ovechkin is posing with some special hardware including the Prince of Wales Trophy, the Stanley Cup, the Conn Smythe Trophy, and the Rocket Richard Trophy. Ovechkin covers a variety of topics in the interview including what his favorite moment of the Stanley Cup celebrations was, his favorite spots to visit, his hopes for other D.C. franchises, and more.

Is it really a special Stanley Cup Championship issue if nobody starts off asking about the Capitals’ rambunctious celebrations? When #FlyWashington Magazine asked Ovechkin what his favorite moment of the celebration was, he answered very diplomatically with, “All the moments were something special, I can’t say which was the best, but I think when we celebrated with the fans at the parade, that was probably something I’ll never forget.” He added, “You know we have fun, the fans have fun, and all the city was crazy about it.”
Ovechkin also chatted about how he hopes the effects of the Capitals’ championship might be a positive thing for the rest of Washington, D.C. sports teams. “I think the Redskins have a really good team. We always support them, I’m a true Redskins fan. I wish them luck and I hope they will be good in the season — they are going to be good in the playoffs as well,” he boldly predicted. “That’s the most important thing. You have to get into the playoffs, and you never know what’s going to happen there.”
Since the magazine is the official publication of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, it’s only right that the magazine asked about travel. Ovechkin talked about one of his favorite destinations, Miami, where he has a vacation home. “When we have a schedule with a day off, I always fly to Miami. It’s got great weather, good food and is an unbelievable place.” He also mentioned some additional spots that he likes to visit, including ones with NHL teams. “I like Montreal. I like Vancouver, L.A. and New York, but not Buffalo,” he laughed. Of course, when he travels with the team, Ovechkin said that he likes to keep it professional. “When we go to a city, I like to relax because we are professional athletes,” he said. “Sometimes you go to a hotel, you take a nap, then maybe you go walk to a restaurant and that’s it.”
In the issue, Ovechkin also details about how Washington, D.C. has become his second home, after Moscow. “I lived on 16th St. my first seven years and then I moved into McLean,” he said. He commented that his new home is in a “great area with unbelievable neighborhoods…If you want to go to shopping, it’s over there. If you want to go to a restaurant, it’s over there. I have a kid right now so there’s lots of stuff going on around over there.” Of course, the Stanley Cup win came the same year as the birth of his son, which he described as “the two biggest moments in my life,” but told #FlyWashington Magazine that becoming a father had the bigger impact on him. “That was something special. The most important thing he is healthy and happy, it’s very good.”
Nowadays, when he has time off, #FlyWashington Magazine asked about the charity work that Ovechkin likes to participate in. He said, “I just like to help people out because I think God gave me what I have, and I think you have to share with the kids, with people who need it…And I love to do that. I think this organization does a great job to support all the people who needs help.”
