Seconds apart, Alex Ovechkin and Devante Smith-Pelly both missed scoring an empty-net goal

Alex Ovechkin and Devante Smith-Pelly both scored in the Capitals’ 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers Monday night, but they also shared in a funny lowlight at the end of the game.

Both players missed out on gimme empty-net goals.

Here’s what went down.

Smith-Pelly won a race for the puck and pushed the biscuit forward to a streaking Alex Ovechkin. The Russian machine took his time, aimed for the net, and… hit the post!

But no worry! Ovechkin got his own rebound and dished to a wide open Smith-Pelly standing in front of the net. DSP goes down to one knee, one-times the puck, and… hits the post too!

Ay yi yi.

While the misses didn’t impact who won or lost, they did have real-life consequences for some.

With the win in the bag, Smith-Pelly was glad to dodge any post-game questions about his open-net miss. Except for one from the captain himself.
