Oil spilt: Oilers beat Caps 4-1

Thursday night, the Washington Capitals continued their westward journey into Edmonton to play the Connor McDavids. There was a whole lot less hatchet tossing and guitar strumming than past days out west, but we did get a hockey game.

Evan Bouchard opened scoring on the man advantage, beating a screened Braden Holtby with a point shot. Ryan Nugent Hopkins doubled that lead shorthanded to kick the second period off, before Andre Burakovsky’s first of the year brought the Caps back in it.

Say it aint so, Alex Chiasson made it 3-1, Edmonton. McDavid empty netter.

    Oilers beat Caps 4-1.

    • Remind me to never make a joke about Filip Forsberg on the tweets ever again.
    • All aboard the struggle bus and you’ll be taking your seat right next to the Capitals penalty kill. Hoo boy, it’s not great Jim. The Caps entered the game behind only the Flyers in terms of giving up power play markers and they swiftly added to that total in the first period via Evan Bouchard‘s first NHL goal.
    • Braden Holtby was flipping fantastic in the loss. He’s needed to be fantastic far too often to open this season.
    • Everyone go do yourself a favor and follow RMNB on Instagram (rmnb_blog) and watch Elizabeth’s journey at the Washington International Horse Show in our story. It’s better than this game was.

    • Andre Burakovsky is finally on the board this season after a beautiful feed from Nic Dowd. The only forwards now left to open their goal scoring accounts are Dmitrij Jaskin and Nathan Walker.
    • John Carlson‘s assist on the aforementioned Burakovsky goal gave him 14 points on the season and sole possession of team point leader. Some may say (about 986 of you in the menchies) that he got that 14th point minutes earlier when he handed Ryan Nugent-Hopkins a shorthanded tally on a silver platter.

    • I think I was almost next in line to get a shift on the top line tonight. If you dressed in white, you basically got a shot up there. I think I’d like to see Dre get the next extended look in that spot.
    • The fourth line was buzzing all night. We’ll look more into specifics in the morning with the numbers post to see if the nerd stuff matches up with my eye test.
    • Linesman pump fakes leading to “delay of game” penalties is utterly hilarious. Drop the damn puck, stripes.
    • How did you guys enjoy tonight’s Marc Joannette show? Oh wait you tuned in to watch a hockey game? Too bad.
    • Who else wants to go zip lining with Joe B, Locker, Alan, and John Walton?

Next up is the Calgary Flames who the Pens are currently obliterating 8-0 at the time of writing this, plus a weird 4 PM eastern start. That will be the last of these weird western faceoff times for a couple weeks, praise be.
