The trade was first reported by David Pagnotta and Pierre LeBrun.
Sounds like Erik Karlsson to San Jose is being made official. Told at least 2 SJ roster players are going to Sens.
— David Pagnotta (@TheFourthPeriod) September 13, 2018
To reiterate: there's more to the trade, but at least 2 current roster players from Sharks are going to Ottawa. Karlsson is only roster player going to Sharks

Told that the official trade call was just completed. Erik Karlsson has been traded to the San Jose Sharks
— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) September 13, 2018
In return, the Senators received defenseman Dylan DeMelo, forward Chris Tierney, Josh Norris, Rudolfs Balcers, and two conditional picks. The conditions on the picks are whether or not Karlsson re-signs with the Sharks and whether Karlsson ends up on an Eastern Conference team roster or not. Chris Tierney was the centerpiece of the trade.
Sources say the #Sens have dealt Erik Karlsson to the Sharks in exchange for Chris Tierney, Dylan DeMelo, Josh Norris, Rudolfs Balcers, 2020 1st, 2019 2nd and two conditional picks.

Chris Tierney being the centerpiece of a trade for THE BEST DEFENSEMAN IN THE NHL is so patently absurd that the correct response is to shut down the Senators.

Rumblings of the trade were first reported by TSN’s Bob McKenzie.
Stop me if you have heard this before — and you have — but there’s been a decided increase in Erik Karlsson trade talk over the last 24-48 hours with the obvious goal of trying to get it done before OTT hits the ice for training camp.
— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) September 13, 2018
I would almost be tempted to say it’s close, but the problem with that is I suspect it’s been this close or even closer in the past and it obviously didn’t get done then, so…let’s just wait and see if this is indeed the real thing.
— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) September 13, 2018
FWIW, my sense is if Karlsson is traded today/tomorrow, it will be to a Western Conference team.

Karlsson had not shown up to Senators training camp Thursday morning, and by noon Luke Fox of SportsNet reported he was a “question mark.”
Almost noon and Erik Karlsson has yet to show up to the Canadian Tire Centre for Sens camp. “Still a question mark,” I’m told.

Matt Duchene, who was dealt to the Senators from the Colorado Avalanche during the 2017-18 season, commented that “you’re never going to replace a player like that.”
Just spoke with Matt Duchene, one of the last Sens players still at the rink, about Erik Karlsson reports: “I know what’s going on. We know the speculation and what’s likely to happen with him…. You’re never going to replace a guy like that.”

The Sharks were making the push to acquire Karlsson early this morning according to Darren Dreger.
Sounds like San Jose is making a huge push to land Erik Karlsson.
— Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) September 13, 2018
Word that he would be shipped to San Jose was first reported by Dieter Kurtenbach of the San Jose Mercury.
Large plumes of smoke on Erik Karlsson heading to the Sharks. Massive plumes.

Karlsson was available at a press conference after the trade, and he was sad to be leaving Ottawa.
Erik Karlsson: “It’s a very emotional and sad day for me and my family.”

“It’s always going to be my home.” – Erik Karlsson on Ottawa pic.twitter.com/e1SLrmSQ9r

Erik Karlsson says “in his wildest imagination” he never thought he’d be leaving. “I still haven’t wrapped my mind around everything.”
— luke fox (@lukefoxjukebox) September 13, 2018
Karlsson did not mince words on his displeasure that he was traded.
“Maybe it could’ve been different…. It was their decision. They made it.” -Erik Karlsson on Senators

Emotional Karlsson holds back tears: “It’s sad.”
