On Saturday, Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin had his official day with the Stanley Cup. He took it to the FIFA World Cup Fan Fest, Dynamo Moscow’s headquarters, and to a private party at Arbat Hall. Per NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti, Ovechkin was also scheduled to have the Cup on Sunday, for a less public celebration.

However, Ovi spontaneously decided to walk through the Red Square in Moscow, with the Stanley Cup held high above his head. He was, as you might expect, mobbed by fans that realized what was happening.

The Washington Post’s Isabelle Khurshudyan, who is in Moscow to document Ovechkin’s Stanley Cup celebrations, was accompanying the Russian machine when he made his impromptu detour.

Ovechkin and his entourage walked through the Red Square, stopping for some photographs, as tourists visiting the heart of Moscow gathered around to celebrate with him.

According to TASS News’ Andrey Kartashov, Ovechkin had no security with him as he shared the moment with hockey fans in the Square. Hopefully Ovi, and the Cup, will make it to their intended destination.
