Capitals fans are already driving record-setting merchandise sales following the team’s Stanley Cup championship, and there’s now another opportunity to own a piece of history, with Capital One Arena announcing it is selling seats and seat cushions from the venue where some of those games were played.
Earlier this year, Monumental Sports & Entertainment — which owns the Capitals and Capital One Arena, along with the Wizards, Mystics, and other sports properties — announced plans for a $40 million renovation of the venue. The upgrades include new seats throughout the arena, and the outgoing 20-year-old seats are going up for sale.
Billed as a “rare opportunity to own a piece of D.C. sports history,” seat cushions are available for purchase through Fanatics, the NHL’s merchandise provider, for $99.
An “event used collectible,” each seat is “officially licensed” and comes with a statement of authenticity certifying that the seat “is from 20 years of Capital One Arena experiences, including the recently crowned Stanley Cup Champions Washington Capitals, The Washington Wizards, The Washington Mystics, and many unforgettable concerts and events.”
Full seats are being offered in pairs, and interested buyers need to contact the arena through its renovation website for details.
This is a truly unique opportunity to sit in a Capital One Arena seat without having to keep asking the fans in front of you to please stop leaning. You’ll also be able to try every cup in your house to see if any of them fit in the cupholders.
Buyer beware, however, as the seat cushion listing notes that, “Due to authentic nature of these seats and normal wear and tear, these items may have cracks, scratches or various other imperfections.” If the picture of the bottom of the seat included in the listing is any indicated, interested buyers may want to plan to clean the cushion thoroughly before use.
Ew.
If the thought of using a cushion that previously hosted thousands of random strangers in some of the most stressful, sweaty situations of their sports-watching lives doesn’t appeal to you, there’s a ton of new Stanley Cup Champions merchandise that doesn’t come pre-loaded with someone else’s cooties.
