With a win on Monday, the Washington Capitals brought their first-round series with the Columbus Blue Jackets to a close and advanced to face the Penguins in Round Two.
The Capitals’ comeback had another, unexpected, side effect: It ravaged the Stanley Cup bracket of NBC Sports’ Mike Milbury.
As first pointed out by @dckerNBC4 on Twitter, Milbury predicted that the Columbus Blue Jackets — “The hottest team in hockey, probably, over the last 20 games,” he said — were going to make it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final.
Well…he got one wrong. #Caps pic.twitter.com/EOny3tiXpp

The full segment aired on NBC ahead of the first games of the postseason. NBC analysts Eddie Olczyk, Keith Jones, Mike Milbury and Anson Carter all made predictions on air. Milbury’s was the first Stanley Cup Final prediction to be wrong. Olczyk and Jones picked the Preds vs. Lightning while Carter believed it’d be a Preds vs Pens rematch.
Here’s hoping the Capitals move on to ruin a few more of those predictions. Game One of their second-round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins begins on Thursday, at 7 PM.
