A week after 17 students and teachers were tragically killed in a mass shooting, the Florida Panthers will hold a ceremony honoring the students of Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The news was first reported by NHL.com columnist Nick Cotsonika.
Thursday marks the Panthers’ first home game since the Valentine’s Day tragedy.
Panthers play Capitals tonight in their first home game since the shooting, which happened near their practice rink in a community where some players live. Some staff members went to that school. A ceremony is planned.

The Florida Panthers’ practice facility, the IceDen, is located a mere four miles away from Stoneman Douglas. Many players live in the surrounding community and some Panthers staff members are even alums of the high school.
The Panthers are doing all they can to help.
“Tonight will be very difficult and very emotional for everyone in the building,” defenseman Mike Matheson said to the Panthers. “We just want to lend a helping hand however we can.”
Both teams will also wear Stoneman Douglas hats during warmups. Panthers head coach, Bob Boughner, wore one during his press conference this morning.

Along with a pregame ceremony, a blood drive is planned both inside and outside the arena to help replenish arena blood banks.

While the shooting affects many different people, Roberto Luongo feels especially connected. With young kids in school, Luongo told Cotsonika his son was in lockdown in a closet for three hours.
“What happened last week, when it hits close to home like that, it’s hard,” Luongo said to the Panthers Thursday morning. “You just want to help as much as you can.”
The Panthers aren’t the only organization supporting Stoneman Douglas. During the opening games of MLB Spring Training, all 30 major league baseball teams will wear Stoneman Douglas hats. In addition, some teams will sign and auction off the hats to raise money for the Broward Education Foundation, the official victims’ fund.
