34-year-old Brooks Laich just received a lifeline to revive his NHL career. The former Capital, who scored one goal in 27 games for the American Hockey League Toronto Marlies last season, signed a PTO — a professional tryout agreement — with the Los Angeles Kings. Laich, who stated multiple times on Instagram that his focus was to get back in the NHL, will skate with the Kings during training camp and attempt to earn a roster spot through good play.
LA Kings Insider Jon Rosen was the first to report the news.
Rosen wrote that Laich’s familiarity with the team and area made it a good fit.
For the last several summers, Laich has been a fixture at Toyota Sports Center’s conditioning skates that draw in players with ties to Southern California who are building up conditioning for the season. In addition to players on the Kings, Sidney Crosby, Ryan Miller and Greg Pateryn are among NHL players who have also skated informally during Augusts at TSC in recent years. Laich, who married Julianne Hough, an actress and Dancing with the Stars judge, over the summer, has ties to the Los Angeles area.
Laich tweeted that he was “fired up” about the opportunity.
Fired up to be attending the @LAKings training camp, grateful for the opportunity and can't wait to put all my summers prep into action!

Laich, who completed a longterm six-year, $27 million contract last season, had an injury-filled 2016-17 campaign, which was made even worse by what appeared to be infighting with Leafs leadership. The forward requested to be dealt at the trade deadline and passed through NHL waivers multiple times during the year. Laich finished the season skating on the Marlies fourth line. After a being shut down in late March due to elbow surgery, Laich left the team and rehabbed by himself in Los Angeles, where he lives with Hough.
The couple married in July and former Capitals defenseman Mike Green attended the wedding.
