The Hershey Bears made their moms proud this Mother’s Day, winning 3-2 in OT of Game Five against the Providence Bruins. Madison Bowey scored the OTGWG less than two minutes into the extra period.
Chris Bourque opened up the scoring for the Bears with 8:48 left in the first period, tipping in a shot from defenseman Tyler Lewington to put Hershey up 1-0.

The Bruins responded early in the second period when Bruins captain Tommy Cross netted a backhand to the top right corner behind Bears goalie Vitek Vanecek to even the score. Five minutes later Hershey’s Paul Carey came to the rescue to once with his second goal of the playoffs to give Hershey the lead with a snapped shot over Zane McIntyre’s glove. Today’s game marked only Carey’s second since he returned from the Capitals playoff roster.

Providence’s Austin Czarnik evened things up once more halfway through the third period, scoring on a rebound to beat Vanecek, who lost a glove and his stick during the goal. Both teams frantically scrambled for the rest of the period as they tried to end the game in regulation time, but for the third time in the series, overtime was required.
It didn’t take much overtime though. Madison Bowey brought victory to the Bears with a wrister from the right point just 1:58 into overtime.

Today’s game was a big one for Chris Bourque. Bourque, a former Providence Bruin, scored his fifth goal of the playoffs today, tying him for second in the league in playoff goals this season. Bourque also registered an assist on Bowey’s OTGWG, marking the 81st of his Calder Cup playoff career and making him the AHL’s new all-time leader in playoff assists.

Tonight was Vitek Vanecek’s first career start in the Calder Cup playoffs, standing in for Pheonix Copley, who had to miss the game due to a lower-body injury that took him out in the second period of Game Four. It is still unknown whether or not Copley will play in Game Six, but Vanecek proved that he can hold his own as the Bears’ starting goalie today, making 27 saves during the game.
Despite being vastly outshot 110-43 during their three game run in Providence, the Bears managed to claim victory in two out of the three contests. The teams will now head back to Hershey, where the Bears will have the chance to win the Atlantic Division Finals series in Game Six on Tuesday night.
More from the Bears:
Madison Bowey scored 1:58 into overtime to lead the Hershey Bears to a 3-2 victory in Game 5 of the Atlantic Division Finals on Sunday afternoon. The Bears victory at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center gave Hershey a 3-2 series lead, and the club will now try to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals with a victory in Game 6 on Tuesday night at the Giant Center.
For the third game this series, overtime was required after the contest finished 2-2 through regulation. In the extra session, it took less than two minutes to declare a winner. Bowey scored his second goal of the series, snapping a shot from the right point over a screened Zane McIntyre, to give Hershey the victory.
Chris Bourque assisted on the goal, giving him his 81st career playoff assist. That moves him into first place all-time in AHL history. Sunday’s game was also the 104th playoff game of Bourque’s Hershey career, moving him into first place in franchise history.
It was Bourque who opened the scoring Sunday. The forward redirected a Tyler Lewington shot over the blocker of McIntyre to make it 1-0 Hershey just 11:12 into the game. The goal was the first McIntyre had surrendered in the first period during the 2017 Calder Cup Playoffs.
After Tommy Cross scored for the Bruins just 3:59 into the second period, Hershey retook the lead at 8:29. In just his second game back from Washington, Paul Carey scored his first goal of the playoffs to make it 2-1 Hershey. Stanislav Galiev fed a pass back to Carey, and the forwarded snapped a shot from the slot that beat McIntyre over the glove.
Austin Czarnik forced overtime with his third period goal for the Bruins, but it was Vitek Vanecek who helped Hershey keep the Bruins from taking the lead. The rookie netminder, starting his first career Calder Cup Playoffs game in place of an injured Pheonix Copley, stopped 27 shots. He made several spectacular saves, including denying a shot on scramble in front late in regulation.
Hershey was outshot 31-17 in the game. Both teams failed to convert on the power play. Hershey was 0-for-4 and Providence was 0-for-3.
Game 6 of the Atlantic Division Finals is Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Hershey.
