Thursday, Capitals goaltending prospect Ilya Samsonov posted a picture of himself in a hospital bed at an orthopedic clinic in Rome, Italy. Samsonov described himself as “feeling in great shape” after “everything went as well as possible,” without giving any details about the procedure he underwent.
Спасибо всем кто рядом! Все прошло как нельзя лучше! Чувствую себя в полном порядке👌😊👍

A source close to Samsonov revealed to RMNB’s Ian Oland that Samsonov underwent “routine” surgery for a hernia, and that the young prospect is “doing fine” and expected to make a full recovery.
Oland also reached out to the Capitals, who confirmed the news, and added that it was a inguinal hernia.
“Ilya Samsonov underwent a successful procedure for an inguinal hernia,” a Caps spokesperson said. “He is expected to make a full recovery and will begin training for next season next month.”
According to WebMD, an inguinal hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weak spot in your groin muscle. This causes a bulge in the groin, which can cause swelling and a feeling of heaviness, tugging, or burning in the area affected.
It’s unknown when Samsonov suffered the injury, but the 19-year-old prospect spent almost the entirety of the Gagarin Cup playoffs on the bench, having started only the team’s first game of the postseason on February 22, 2017.
Samsonov also admitted to suffering an “awful” injury during the Bronze Medal game of the World Junior Championship in January.
The trip to Rome was not all business, however. Samsonov was able to enjoy a brief visit to the Coliseum before undergoing surgery. The caption reads, “getting our culture on.”
