Tuesday morning the Capitals announced that they have called up forward Travis Boyd from AHL affiliate Hershey Bears. This is Boyd’s very first NHL call-up in his second season playing with the Bears.

In 53 games with Hershey this year, Boyd has registered 43 points (11 goals and 32 assists), good enough for second on the team in points. He recently represented the team in the AHL All-Star Game along with teammate Chris Bourque.

At the end of Development Camp last summer, Barry Trotz promised Boyd an opportunity to make the Capitals out of Training Camp. Nearly six months later, Boyd has finally earned a look from the big-league team.

The Washington Capitals have recalled forward Travis Boyd from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today.

Boyd, 23, registered 43 points (11g, 32a) in 53 games with Hershey this season and leads the team in assists and ranks second in points. In addition, Boyd ranks tied for third in the AHL in assists and tied for eighth in points. The Hopkins, Minn., native represented the Atlantic Division at the 2017 AHL All-Star Classic in Allentown, Pa. and recorded three points (2g, 1a). Last season, Boyd ranked second among Bears skaters in assists (32) and third in points (53) and goals (21). He won Hershey’s Kenny Smith Memorial Award for most player of the game nominations and scored the game-winning goal in overtime in Game 7 of the Atlantic Division Finals against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on May 15, 2016. The 5’11”, 191-pound forward has recorded 98 points (33g, 65a) in 131 career AHL games with Hershey. Boyd played at the University of Minnesota for four seasons from 2011-15 and earned 96 points (32g, 64a) in 148 games. He was drafted by the Capitals in the sixth round, 177th overall, in the 2011 NHL Draft.
