Game recap
(Hershey, PA – October 29, 2016) – After spending the majority of the first period on the penalty kill, the Hershey Bears offense ignited in the final 40 minutes to spark the club to its second win of the season. The Bears scored four goals in the game’s middle frame and rolled to a 7-2 victory over the Binghamton Senators on Saturday night at the GIANT Center. Jakub Vrana and Christian Thomas scored twice in the victory. Hershey has collected standings points in four straight games.
Trailing 1-0, Hershey took over the game in the second period, outshooting the Senators 11-3. Hershey’s pressure would be rewarded with a goal from defender Madison Bowey off a faceoff at 2:57. Travis Boyd won the draw for Hershey back to teammate Jakub Vrana. He sent a backhand pass to Bowey, and the defender’s shot beat Binghamton goaltender Scott Greenham over the shoulder to make it 1-1.
Thomas would score his first of two goals on a turnover at 6:41. Chandler Stephenson knocked down Binghamton’s Zack Stortini, and the puck popped to Thomas. The forward wasted no time and snapped a shot that beat Greenham past the blocker. Shortly following, Hershey would make it 3-1 as Riley Barber struck on a great individual effort. The forward charged ahead on a one-on-three and cut to the middle of the ice. He snapped a shot through the five-hole of Greenham for his second goal of the season at 11:56.
Vrana would finish the scoring for the Bears in the second period at 16:24. The forward threw a pass to the net with teammate Joey Leach providing a screen in front. The puck hit a Binghamton defender and bounced over Greenham’s shoulder to make it 4-1 Hershey.
After the Senators scored to make it 4-2 late in the second period, the Bears would add three more goals in the third period to complete their biggest offensive output of the year. After Chris Bourque added his first goal of the season at 8:52, Thomas scored his second of the game on the power play at 11:14, outwaiting Greenham and slipping a backhand shot over the outstretched goaltender.
Hershey would add a final goal as Vrana struck for his second tally, finishing a tic-tac-toe passing play from Stephenson and Paul Carey at 12:16.
The night started much different for Hershey then it finished. Phil Varone scored for Binghamton only 7:12 into the game to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. After a large scrum at 7:34 of the opening period, and a penalty shortly following, the Bears were shorthanded for four minutes, including being down 5-on-3 for two minutes. The penalty kill, and netminder Joe Cannata, came up large to keep the deficit just one, and setup the seven goal outburst.
Cannata stopped 15 shots to earn his second win of the season in goal. The Bears outshot the Senators 31-17. Both teams were 1-for-4 on the power play.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow at 5 p.m. versus Lehigh Valley. The special evening is Mixed-Up Productions Pink The Rink Night featuring a breast cancer awareness silent jersey auction. The evening is also a Dietz & Watson Dollar Dog Night. Tickets are available.
