Two former Capitals, two former Bears make Canadian Olympic team

With the NHL’s decision to not participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics, players that would never have sniffed their national teams at an Olympic event have earned a chance at making their country’s respective rosters.

In December, we saw former Capital and current Hershey Bear, Chris Bourque as well as Ryan Stoa named to the US Olympic team in late December. Thursday, the Canadian Olympic team announced their squad and it features even more former Capitals and Bears.

BioSteel Camp holds player draft: Tyler Seguin selects Tom Wilson and Brett Connolly

The eighth annual BioSteel Camp will soon begin. The event is a week-long training program where several dozen NHL superstars, prospects, and role players ready themselves in Toronto for their upcoming NHL training camps. BioSteel holds the sessions near the end of August each year and it includes three days of intense training followed by a single day tournament.

This summer, Capitals forwards Tom Wilson, Brett Connolly, and Devante Smith-Pelly are participating along with former Capitals Michael Latta, Joel Ward, and Christian Thomas.

Monday, there was a player draft featuring captains Michael Del Zotto, Tyler Seguin, Wayne Simmonds, and Darnell Nurse. Wilson and Connolly were picked by Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin while Smith-Pelly was chosen first by Wayne Simmonds.

Newest Capital Devante Smith-Pelly randomly meets Floyd Mayweather at boxing press conference in Toronto

On August 26, undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather will take on UFC fighter Conor McGregor in what may be the biggest fight in history. Ahead of their fight in Las Vegas, the two are partaking in a four-day, four city worldwide press tour.

Mayweather is the favorite to walk away from the event with the victory and he had two special guests during the second date in Toronto: new Capitals forward Devante Smith-Pelly and free agent Hershey Bears forward Christian Thomas.

Michael Latta signs with Arizona Coyotes, tries weird new training exercise

The same day Andre Burakovsky got a new deal with the Capitals, former roommate Michael Latta inked one of his own with the Arizona Coyotes.

Latta’s deal, according to CapFriendly, is a one-year, two-way contract that will pay him the league minimum ($650,000).

Travis Boyd scores tenth goal of the season in Bears’ 5-2 victory over the Phantoms

The Bears’ top four leading scorers (and Zach Sill) provided the goals in Hershey’s 5-2 win over the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Monday. Reigning AHL player-of-the-week, Vitek Vanecek, made 23 saves in the win.

The Bears’ second leading scorer, Chris Bourque, got the Bears’ first goal, his 499th career point for Hershey. Travis Boyd, the team’s leading scorer, would put the Bears up less than a minute later. Next, Paul Carey would extend his point streak to 19 games on a deflection. Christian Thomas and Zach Sill finished the game off for the Bears with goals in the third.

Boyd now has 29 points in 29 games. The goal also marks his second straight double digit goal season in the AHL.

Travis Boyd scores game-winning goal in Bears 4-3 win

Friday night, the Hershey Bears held on for a 4-3 win over the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on the backs of Christian Thomas and Travis Boyd.

After two second-period tallies, Thomas took sole position of the team lead in goals (11) over newly-graduated Jakub Vrana. On a first period assist and the game-winning goal in the third, Boyd moved into first on the team in points with 19.

Top prospect defenseman Madison Bowey also scored in his first game back following a four-game absence with a lower-body injury. Joe Cannata stopped 23 shots in the Bears’ fourth straight win.

Two Travis Boyd goals key to Bears 4-3 win over Thunderbirds

Saturday night, the Hershey Bears were able to jump out to a three-goal lead over the Springfield Thunderbirds on goals from Travis Boyd, Chandler Stephenson, and Christian Thomas. Thomas’ goal would tie him with Jakub Vrana for the team lead (9).

Although the Thunderbirds were able to battle back in the second, the Bears would thwart any comeback attempts as Travis Boyd would score the eventual game-winner early in the third for his second goal of the game. It came off a dynamite Vrana assist. The win was the Bears’ second over the Thunderbirds in as many nights.

Vrana and Boyd are now tied for second on the Bears in points (16). Caps prospect goaltender Vitek Vanecek stopped 16 shots for the win. The win marked Troy Mann’s 100th with the Bears.

Vitek Vanecek notches second shutout of season in Bears’ 4-0 win over Baby Pens

The Hershey Bears dispatched their intra-state rival, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 4-0 in a scrappy game Wednesday night. Prospect goaltender Vitek Vanecek made 24 saves to earn his second shutout of the season.

Four different Bears scored including Zach Sill, Christian Thomas, Christian Djoos, and Paul Carey. Carey’s goal extended his point streak to 12 games.

The game was scoreless for the first 39:21 of the game until Zach Sill scored the eventual game winner.

Jakub Vrana scores his ninth goal of the season after Travis Boyd finds him with the twister pass

The Hershey Bears lost to rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 4-3 in overtime Saturday night, but let’s focus on the good.

In the first period, Bears center Travis Boyd hit Jakub Vrana with Evgeny Kuznetsov’s twister pass to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. I’m serious.

Christian Thomas and Chris Bourque each score twice in Bears win

Entering their game against the Syracuse Crunch Friday night, Hershey Bears players had no idea that some of them would be making one their final impressions before the Caps would call up a forward. They put on a good showing, defeating the Crunch 5-1.

Jakub Vrana opened up the scoring in the first with a breakaway goal after a nice pass from Chris Bourque. The tally would be Vrana’s eighth of the season. Bourque and Christian Thomas would each add two goals as the game went on.

Chris Bourque leads the Bears in points after Friday with four goals and twelve assists. Though Vrana owns the lead for goals with eight, veteran Christian Thomas has put up an impressive six for second on the team. Chandler Stephenson recorded three assists on the night as well, pushing his assist total to seven on the year. Vitek Vanecek stopped 23 of 24 shots for the win.
