With the Washington Capitals officially locked in to the 2014-2015 postseason, most Caps fans are eagerly anticipating the playoffs, which will begin next week. Two fans are looking a bit further ahead – to November, when they’re expecting their first child.
The way they announced the news to family and friends this week was one of a kind.
A few weeks ago, Nick and Jenn P. drove 45 miles from their home in Chesapeake Beach to attend Troy Brouwer and Alex Ovechkin’s autograph signing in Laurel, Md. They were on a mission to enlist everyone’s favorite Capital [Author’s note: He’s everyone’s favorite, right?] in a very special announcement, and came armed with an item neither player had likely ever seen before: a custom-made “Future Brouwer Fan” shirt.
“I was nervous that no pictures were going to be allowed,” Jenn told RMNB. “I would have been heartbroken and would have been trying to rearrange my and my husband’s work schedules to get to Kettler for a practice.”
But Jenn had nothing to worry about. Though a little taken aback by the request, Brouwer seemed happy to participate. “Once Troy started talking, I wasn’t as nervous,” Jenn said. “He’s a regular guy too, and very, very down to earth.” A friend who attended practice a few days later told Jenn that Brouwer said it was one of the nicest requests he has ever had and that he was honored that they enlisted his help with it.
Unbeknownst to Nick and Jenn, their request would help break other pregnancy related news. Brouwer spilled the beans that he and wife Carmen are expecting their second child this fall, and that John Carlson, John Erskine and Evgeny Kustnetsov are all fathers-to-be as well.
“We thought it would be cool to have our announcement reflect something that we are passionate about,” Jenn said. “Brouwer is my favorite player on the team and has been since he came over from the Blackhawks, so … I had a shirt made, and we decided that it would be the perfect way to announce it with him involved.”
In addition to her special shirt, Jenn brought her #20 jersey, which she had Brouwer sign, and some custom shoes modeled after the Chuck Taylor All-Stars worn by the Brouwer Rangers and, possibly, Troy himself.
“[Brouwer] is my favorite player because he is a silent leader,” Jenn explained. “He has a strong work ethic and he has a goofy side too – the Gangnam Style video is one of my favorites out of all the goofy things all the Caps players have done. Troy has this strong likability about him, and I think that’s why I’ve always been drawn to him as a player since he came to the Caps from Chicago.”
Over the long Easter weekend, Nick and Jenn announced to their families that their little rookie would make his or her debut in November. How did the family feel about Brouwer finding out before them?
“They thought the idea was really cool, and suited us perfectly,” Jenn said, explaining that she and Nick are “very sports oriented people. We even had an Orioles/Capitals wedding two years ago.” See?
As the global ambassadors of Brouwer Pouwer Nation, we had to meet up with Nick and Jenn to congratulate them as well. We swung by their seats before the Caps’ penultimate regular-season game last night to make a special delivery of our own.
So all that remains is to settle on a name. Jenn says if it’s a boy, they’re considering naming him Troy Nicklas, incorporating a nod to her husband’s favorite Capital, Nick Backstrom. If it’s a girl, they might have a problem.
“Our luck, it’ll be a girl since we can’t agree on anything there,” Jenn said. “Though, since our last name starts with P, I really want a girl’s initials to end up being CAP!”
Now that’s being a superfan!
Thank you again to @tbrouwer20 for helping us with our very special announcement. You are one of a kind, Troy! pic.twitter.com/aJrEiyRFDO
