Hockey’s gone and many hockey fans are stuck at home. But sports are on pause doesn’t mean sports fans have done the same!
Friend of the blog Jenn P, woke up to find her son Troy had decorated the family’s kitchen cabinets with an array of hockey sticks. Inspired by her tweet, we decided to ask what else y’all have been up to.

“No, don’t touch my Garny!” Troy P. hollers at the TV whenever the “bad guys” get too close to his favorite player, forward Garnet Hathaway.
Coming up with hockey commentary, saying goodnight to his carefully curated list of favorite players before bed, and listing the entire Washington Capitals lineup by jersey number would be impressive for any four-year-old–but it’s especially impressive for Troy, who has a speech delay.
When Troy went to see his pediatrician for his two-year check-up, his parents, Jenn and Nick, learned that Troy was below the developmental verbal benchmarks for his age. After another evaluation, he was diagnosed with a speech impairment, which affects his ability to verbally communicate. “There are still many sounds he can’t express and say,” Jenn wrote, “and sometimes it is difficult for him and you can tell he gets frustrated.”
Luckily, Troy has his loving parents; a support network of friends and family; dedicated and skilled speech pathologists and teachers; and a hockey community that shares Troy’s passion for the game and welcomes him with open arms.
“Hockey in our family is so much more than just a sport he plays and watches,” Jenn wrote. “We are fortunate enough that Troy found something he loves at such an early age that helps to keep him motivated to continually help him reach new goals in his communication.”

Reader Jenn P. has a special little boy named Troy, who recently became a big fan of Garnet Hathaway fan. Hathaway turned 28 years old today but missed the Canucks game due to his suspension. Four-year-old Troy knew that Hathaway was in trouble, but he just couldn’t bear to think that his favorite player would be sad on his birthday.
So Troy took action.

On Monday, Caps fans Nick and Jenn Passero published photos of their baby Troy Nicklas celebrating his first Halloween. Their adorable child, named after former Capital Troy Brouwer and Super Swede Nicklas Backstrom, wore a homemade Halloween costume of Tom Wilson sitting in a penalty box. The photos went so viral that even Pavel Datsyuk posted a copy of one of the images on his own Instagram.
RMNB readers Jenn and Nick P. have always been enthusiastic Caps fans. For example, they named their recently born son, Troy Nicklas, after Troy Brouwer and Nicklas Backstrom.
On Monday, Jenn and Nick dressed Baby Troy in his first Halloween costume and this time, the parents thought an homage to Tom Wilson was appropriate. Now dressing up your baby as a hockey enforcer is cute, but it’s the final detail that makes this memorable. Jenn constructed a makeshift penalty box for Troy to wear and sit in.

Saturday night, Troy Brouwer made his grand return to Washington for the first time since he was traded to St. Louis for TJ Oshie. It has been an emotional night for Brouwer. The Caps aired a tribute video for Brouwer during the first period and the former Brouwer Pouwer leader received a standing ovation. Earlier, there were warm-ups.
Fans traveled down to the Blues’ side to hold up signs and say thank you to the former Capital, including RMNB readers Nick and Jenn Passero. The couple held up a sign that said, “My name is Troy after #36.” The parents had named their one-year-old son, Troy Nicklas, after Brouwer and current Caps center Nicklas Backstrom.
With the Washington Capitals officially locked in to the 2014-2015 postseason, most Caps fans are eagerly anticipating the playoffs, which will begin next week. Two fans are looking a bit further ahead – to November, when they’re expecting their first child.
The way they announced the news to family and friends this week was one of a kind.
