Jakub Vrana Thinks Aussie Nathan Walker Speaks a Different Language

On Wednesday, CSN aired a feature by Jill “Sasha Whisperer” Sorenson on Washington Capitals prospect Nathan Walker. It’s a fascinating piece.

Sorenson documents just how difficult Walker’s road to the NHL has been. There are only 22 ice rinks on the entire (!) continent of Australia. The rink closest to Walker was 45 minutes away– we assume that’s drive-time in a V8 Interceptor Pursuit Special.

But the best part of the story was when Walker told a story about Jakub Vrana from rookie camp.

“Vrana was asking me, ‘Say something in Australian then say something in American!'” Walker began. “I was like, ‘They’re both the same language, just different accents.’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah! Go on! Say it.'”

Should I laugh or be concerned?

A few more takeaways:

  1. There’s a “mate” reference. OH MY GOD CSN MADE A MATE REFERENCE.
  2. “We’re going to the baseball game eh,” Andre Burakovsky, whose command of English is maybe the worst on the team, says to Walker to make fun of his English.
  3. Apparently there’s a Nathan Walker day in Australia.
  4. Those awesome kangaroo photos we published the other day ended up in the feature. Wulos, you rule.
  5. Walker on the two questions he’s asked the most: “What accent is that?” and “You play hockey in Australia?”
