Joel Rechlicz has played 26 games at the NHL level and come away with a career total of one point: an assist. He’s not now nor has he ever been a goal scorer. Which explains the reaction of Caps radio man John Walton when Rechlicz was tapped to take the fourth shootout attempt of Monday’s exhibition game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

    “Oh my goodness.”

The game was not televised (and the Flyers’ stream was region-locked), so you’ll have to make do with Walton’s audio and my artist’s rendition of Wrecker’s shootout game-winner. It feels weird just to type that.

The Capitals (or a close approximation thereto) blew a two-goal lead only to have Ryan Stoa (37 games played in Colorado) tie it up in the final minute. The Capitals are 2-0 in the preseason, both shootout wins. Some might say that preseason wins in the shootout do not predict regular-season success, but shut up. Just shut up.

The best thing I’ve ever seen in hockey was @TheRecker19 scoring the shootout winner tonight!!! #TheBigBoiii

    UPDATE: Here’s Joel Rechlicz’s post-game interview.
