Monumental Sports Network officially goes live, completes rebrand from NBC Sports Washington

NBC Sports Washington is now officially Monumental Sports Network, completing a full re-brand that began last year.

The Leonsis-led channel posted several videos on social media and sent out a long press release, explaining the changes and enhancements for the new sports seasons. In short: new graphics, new music, a new studio, new (and the return of some popular) programming, and new production techniques are coming,

For Capitals fans, there will be no changes to the talent lineup for broadcasts. Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin will continue to do play-by-play while pregame shows will feature Alexa Landestoy and Alan May.

Monumental Sports Network posted several teaser videos on social media to celebrate officially going live, showing off some of its epic new music and graphics.

Leader, role model, and warrior: Capitals players salute retiring Brooks Orpik on social media

Brooks Oprik announced his retirement through a Capitals release on Tuesday morning.

During his time in Washington, the hulking defenseman left an indelible impact on his teammates. From his big goals to his big hits, Capitals players looked up to Orpik as a leader, role model, and friend. On social media and in statements released through the team, the Capitals showered Orpik with praise and thanked him for his time in Washington.

“Batya was a great leader in our locker room and was so important for us to win our first Stanley Cup,” Alex Ovechkin said.

“He is a terrific person and a friend,” TJ Oshie said.

“Thanks for always looking after me on and off the ice,” Andre Burakovsky said. “You have been a true friend and role model for me.”

Hockey players can sometimes be inarticulate. This is not one of those times.

Zach Leonsis purchases $9 million Kalorama home

Zach Leonsis, senior vice president of strategic initiatives for Monumental Sports & Entertainment, general manager of Monumental Sports Network, and son of Ted Leonsis, just made a rather hefty real-estate purchase. A $9 million Kalorama mansion, to be exact, according to Curbed DC, the Washington Business Journal and UrbanTurf.

The home was previously owned by Robert Allbritton, the founder of Politico. Allbritton sold it in 2007 to the current owners. It was first listed by those owners in October 2017 for $9,975,000.

We were all Ted Leonsis after the Caps’ Game Five win

Every year in the postseason, the Washington Capitals take years off their fans’ lives, and this year has been no different.

After winning Game One 3-2 in overtime, the Capitals lost the next two games, facing a 2-1 series deficit to the eight seed in the East. Capitals owner Ted Leonsis traveled with the team up to Toronto for Game Three and his tortured face said it all.

But the Capitals have rallied. And Friday, after Justin Williams scored the OTGWG to give the Caps a 3-2 series lead, Leonsis was the happiest guy in Verizon Center.

Ted Leonsis’ Seat Mojo: The Owner’s Perspective on Alex Ovechkin’s Four-Goal Night

Ted Leonsis, the Washington Capitals’ gregarious owner, is almost always at the Verizon Center for home games. Tuesday was no different, as he and his son Zach took their usual seats in the Owner’s Box.

After Mike Green‘s first-period penalty hat trick, things looked dire. …That is until Uncle Ted changed the fate of his team and the order of the universe with one decision. Like in those Bud Light commercials.
