Alex Chiasson was put on waivers Monday in a surprise move by the Edmonton Oilers.
Chiasson can be optioned to the Oilers’ taxi squad or the AHL if he is not claimed by another NHL team by noon Tuesday.
After cutting six players from their training camp roster this morning, the Capitals placed nine others on waivers Monday afternoon.
The Washington Post’s Samantha Pell reports that Daniel Carr, Zach Fucale, Shane Gersich, Lucas Johansen, Paul LaDue, Cam Schilling, Michael Sgarbossa, Philippe Maillet, and Pheonix Copley.

The team put 2018 Stanley Cup champion, Christian Djoos, on waivers along with seven other players.

The NHL paused its season last week as the novel coronavirus spread across North America. According to the NHL, players “are expected to be in their home market cities” and “all practices, workouts and team meetings have been put on pause.”
But apparently, teams can still make roster moves during this unprecedented time, which is what the Anaheim Ducks did on Sunday. Ducks general manager Bob Murray put forward Kiefer Sherwood on waivers.
Sherwood played in Anaheim’s final game before the pause – a 4-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues. He has one assist in 10 games this season.
The Capitals have dodged another bullet. The team’s former backup goaltender, Pheonix Copley, has cleared waivers and loaned to the American Hockey League’s Hersey Bears.
Copley was put on waivers on Wednesday afternoon as the Capitals announced their 2019-20 roster. Goaltender Ilya Samsonov was awarded the backup position.

In a shocking move, the Washington Capitals placed Pheonix Copley on waivers Wednesday. Copley signed a three-year contract last season to keep him in DC until 2022.
“It was a really difficult decision for us organizationally,” head coach Todd Reirden said. “To have to put Copley on waivers was something organizationally, that we had to do and with where we’re at in today’s cap world, it was a tough one, especially with his work ethic, who he is as a person, how good he is in our locker room. It was a real tough day to inform him yesterday that he wasn’t coming on this trip and ultimately putting him on waivers.”
The move indicates, either due to the salary cap or the longterm future of the team, that the Capitals will go with Ilya Samsonov as the team’s backup goaltender moving forward where he continue his rapid development. The aggressive move also suggests Braden Holtby’s future with the team beyond this season is in question. Holtby is a UFA at season’s end and is likely due a contract with an annual average salary of around $10 million.
Hershey Bears regulars Nathan Walker and Riley Barber both left the Capitals organization in the summer for better opportunities on other NHL teams.
Tuesday, their dreams of starting the 2019-20 season in the NHL likely came to an end when the St. Louis Blues and Montreal Canadiens put both players on waivers.
Almost exactly one year ago the Capitals signed Maximilian Kammerer to a two-way, three-year contract. On Tuesday, the Athletic’s Chris Kuc reported that the Capitals have placed Kammerer on unconditional waivers, meaning his contract with the Capitals’ organization can be terminated.
The undrafted German forward played with the Capitals’ AHL affiliate the Hershey Bears for the 2018-19 season. He registered only four goals and nine assists over the course of 33 games, missing a significant amount of games due to injury and healthy scratches, and was not called up to the Capitals during the regular season of playoffs.
Before being signed by the Capitals, Kammerer was the 2016-17 rookie of the year for the German league, Deutsche Eishockey Liga. In 2017-18 he was the second leading scorer for his former team, Düsseldorfer EG.

Stanley Cup champion Eric Fehr left DC more than two years ago. In those two years, he has now been placed on waivers twice: once by the Pittsburgh Penguins and now by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
On Monday, after officially signing defenseman Roman Polak to a contract, the Leafs began the process of removing Fehr from their roster. Dominic Moore beat Fehr out for the team’s fourth-line center role and it looks like the Leafs are choosing to carry eight defensemen.
